AWARENESS RAISING CAMPAIGN AGAINST RAPE IN LUNGI, PORT LOKO DISTRICT

The campaign against sexual violence has started getting momentum in Sierra Leone by passing on the new sexual offences bill and the First Lady hands of our girl campaign and also the seriousness President Boi attaches to the fight against a sexual offence especially rape and sexual penetration. The campaign attracted the attention of international partners and also local non-governmental organizations. The organization Advocacy for Women Ebola Survival, Street Children and Raped Victims in Sierra Leone (AWESSCRV-SL) has been in this campaign since 2017.

The organization has been targeting communities, schools and local authorities by providing psychosocial counselling and other forms of support such as the provision of school furniture and learning materials. The Chief Executive Officer of AWESSCRV-SL, James Moore said rapes, sexual violence and penetration are against the laws of Sierra Leone and his organization is working closely with the Family Support Unit of the Sierra Leone Police to prosecute perpetrators. Mr Moore made mention that his organization is being funded by the membership of the C.G.K.V Church in Holland and some well-meaning Sierra Leoneans at home, James Moore disclosed that the main aim of the establishment of his foundation in 2017 was to complement the effort of the government in addressing some of the social issues affecting women and girls in Sierra Leone.

The chairman of the anti-violence campaign Sewata Kanu said that issues relating to rape and sexual violence are becoming unbearable and pledged support to the organization in the fight against these and social menace. Gender expert on sexual violence Madam Fatmata Wallace recommended the effort of the CEO of AWESSCRV-SL, James Moore for his contribution in ensuring that some of these practices are fought against in Sierra Leone. She encouraged him to keep on the good work. A representative from the Paramount chief, Ibrahim Kamara, Chiefdom Youth Leader and a representative of the Bethel Pre and Primary school made meaningful contributions.
