AWESSCRV Launches Campaign Against Sexual Offences in Bo District

The campaign against sexual violence has started getting momentum in Sierra Leone by passing on the new sexual offences bill and the First Lady hands of our girl campaign and also the seriousness President Boi attaches to the fight against a sexual offence especially rape and sexual penetration. The campaign against rape and sexual penetration has attracted attention from not only the international partners but also stakeholders in communities across the country.

TFirst Lady Fatima Bio has launched the Hands of Our Girls campaign in almost all the districts in the country, where traditional leaders have been crowned as Ambassadors of the campaign. The Chief Executive Officer of the Advocacy for Women Ebola Survival, Street Children and Raped Victims (AWESSCRV-SL), James Moore said that they are working with the Family Support Unit of the Sierra Leone Police to make sure that perpetrator of gender base violence, sexual offences including sexual penetration are prosecuted. Mr. Moore added that funds to implement the project are generated by the membership of the C.G.K.V Church in Holland and some meaningful Sierra Leoneans. He disclosed that the motivation behind the setting up the organization in 2007 was to complement government’s effort in addressing more of the social issues affecting women and girls in Sierra Leone. The Executive Director called on the gathering to join them on the fight against sexual violence and rape in Sierra Leone.

The Head Teacher of the RC girls Maduna Primary School in Bo, Madam Alice Alpha commended AWESSCRV-SL for their effort in propagating the message against sexual violence and rape cases across the country. Madam Alice Alpha encouraged pupils to make use of the opportunity by discouraging any attempt by men to sexually harassed them.

Formal member of parliament for Constituency 098 now 082 Gladys Bapie Brima made mention about the tidiness of the programme about girls are to say no to sexual violence and rape. The honourable encouraged pupils to report all sexual violence cases to their parents or to the police for appropriate action.

The representative from the Family Support Unit in Bo, eastern police station Madam Lucy Tucker educated pupils the penalties perpetrators will suffered and encouraged them to report all forms of sexual offences to their parents or the police.
